Watering Instructions

Plant Watering

Congratulations on enhancing your landscape with new plants! To ensure they continue to thrive, follow these essential watering guidelines.

Watering Schedule

Determining the optimal watering schedule isn’t an exact science; it depends on factors like plant size, soil conditions, and weather. Newly planted trees and shrubs require more frequent watering to help them transition from pot to ground.

  • First 2-3 Weeks: Water three times a week, especially during warmer seasons.
  • Remainder of Growing Season: Reduce watering to twice a week.

Watering Trees

A newly installed tree can absorb up to 20 gallons of water per week, spaced out over a few days, during its first year.

How to Check for Moisture
The most effective method is to inspect the soil, aiming for moist rather than soggy conditions.

  • No Rainfall? Use a garden trowel to check the soil at a depth of two inches. If it feels dry, it’s time to water.
  • For Accuracy: Inexpensive moisture meters or garden soil probes are available online.
